Client Case Study
Han Pham, Non-Profit and Community Leader
In this impassioned talk, civic activist Han Pham asks, “What can ‘we the people’ do to ensure leadership actually reflects the wondrous diversity of our people?”.
THe ask:
Han Pham, Executive Director of Her Term, had been doing powerful work—mentoring leaders, building community programs, and supporting civic engagement across Georgia. But despite her success, Han didn’t get the public recognition she earned, and deserved.
She came to Spotlight Communications Group with a challenge: how do you grow your platform when your work speaks volumes, but people aren’t hearing it?
Our Approach: Turning Leadership into Public Recognition
To achieve Han’s goals, we needed to build and grow her public profile, amplify the non-profit’s mission, and drive donor engagement and partnership growth.
First, we refined her public narrative and created strong foundational materials:
- Messaging: We reshaped Han’s talking points and developed a public narrative that would highlight her dual roles as a civic strategist and community builder, aligning her personal story with broader missions.
- Press Kit Development: We created a tailored set of media-ready materials, including a polished biography, headshots, and talking points—all designed to reflect Han’s credibility, accessibility, and purpose-driven leadership.
With a strong narrative in place, we launched a visibility campaign:
- Securing Prestigious Awards: We identified and helped Han win respected and prestigious awards that resonated with Han’s target audience—donors, civic stakeholders, and political leadership circles across Georgia. These were highly visible, highly competitive honors with real reputational value. Han was named one of Atlanta Magazine’s Women Making a Mark—a statewide recognition reserved for leaders driving significant community change. She was also selected as a Decatur Hometown Hero, celebrating her grassroots impact in one of Georgia’s most civically engaged cities. Our work on helping Han win these awards served as anchor points in her visibility campaign, offering both press opportunities and long-term credibility with funders and partners.
- Editorial Strategy: Han had a strong message—she just needed the right platform that went beyond the headlines. We worked with Han to blueprint, write, and edit a compelling original opinion-editorial piece (op-ed) that was accepted and published both online and in print by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), Georgia’s most widely read publication.
This was a major win—to be a published thought leader voice in the AJC’s op-ed section is highly competitive, and placements are rare. The piece allowed Han to speak directly to Georgia’s civic and donor audiences in her authentic voice. Our team successfully positioned Han as a credible thought leader on representation and public engagement.
- Feature-Driven Media Coverage: For Han, we focused on feature articles and milestone announcements—coverage that spotlighted her work, her story, and her leadership in full. These weren’t quick quotes or reactive commentary—they were full-length pieces centered on her achievements, like her selection for the Obama Foundation Leaders USA Program and her community-building through the Lunar New Year Festival. These stories helped elevate her visibility ahead of donor events, drove community engagement, and reinforced her position as a recognized civic leader in Georgia.
- Newswire Distribution: We used a newswire to push key announcements across a wide network of credible news sites—boosting Han’s online presence and making sure she shows up prominently in Google searches. This was critical for attracting donors, media, and partners, who often look someone up before deciding to connect, contribute, or cover them.
